Practices in Reading the Quran Here and Now: Chapter Qalam (Pen) – Part 16

51- “And the deniers would almost kill you with their eyes when they hear the Reminder; and they say: “Surely he is possessed”.
52- “Yet this is merely a reminder to all mankind.”

The Pen (68) 51-52

Who are the deniers?

An attitude that is not open to receiving and accepting a new message. Mostly, people born into a certain non-religious or religious tradition carry a dogmatic stance of their inherited ideology or religion. That is, they follow a certain ideology or belief system without questioning it.

Why would most people not accept the message?

It is not that these people are not convinced, on the contrary, these people have made up their mind not to submit to the TRUTH as a result of not using their human qualities.

Why would the deniers rebel against the one that presents the TRUTH?

They chose to remain ignorant to seek answers to their inner human question. Since revelation is nothing but reminder of our human reality, they deviate from anything and anyone that speaks the TRUTH by calling them mad-man, rather than coming up with a counter argument which is logically consistent. This is a typical human reaction to rejecting someone’s argument by attacking their personal character.

While spreading the truth, the Prophet (PBUH) encountered a myriad of rebellion. One famous one is Abu Jahl, a character known to always repudiate the Prophetic message. Despite that, the Prophet never avoided him but faced him with Compassion and Mercy. Another such instance is the woman known in most historical narration as throwing trash on the Prophet. The day that she did not throw, the Prophet went to inquire about her, a sign of Compassion from the One that creates all objects/events and qualities in this universe.

  • An individual’s duty towards the One that gives Compassion is to use that Compassion in order to convey the truth.
  • An individual should be aware that the result is created by the Source of Compassion. That is, if a person heed to the message or not is not the individual’s doing.
  • An individual’s duty should just be to share or convey the TRUTH or what s/he feels satisfied with.
  • In this endeavor, if someone attacks your ideology, just make use of the Prophetic way as briefly mentioned above. If someone attacks you physically, ONLY then you should defend yourself physically. It is so SIMPLE!

What does the Quranic message entails?

It is a reminder to the order that a conscious individual can observe in the universe. Analogy: if you do not turn the light bulb on, the light will never shine. Similarly, if you do not use your human qualities to understand your existence, you will never be enlightened with the TRUTH. The Qur’an informs the people of the order of the way the universe has been created. The Qur’an does not pass judgement about certain people’s future attitude and tells that you should ignore some people because they are not going to be open to the Truth.

What do we do with people whose hearts are sealed?

It is not your duty to be concerned with this. As long as people are given existence, they are given opportunities to turn the light bulb on (as per analogy above). That means that there is hope as long as they are not dead, they can sow the seed of life and follow the order in creation. If someone rebels to the truth today, tomorrow s/he can submit to it. The ones that rebelled (the deniers) against the Prophets were the ones who would protect him after 20 years of hearing about the message. This also helps to explain that extraordinary miracles were not always at play in times of war. It is just that the people who first rebelled got on the side of the TRUTH. It takes some time to digest any new ideology or concept. Nothing happens overnight. We just need to learn to be patient within ourselves and others around us.

The Quranic message seems to present the TRUTH which can be comprehended by anyone based on how much they have developed in their human capacity. Hence, it becomes a universal message then.

The Quranic message is also a reminder to the endless qualities one may observe here which can help one conclude logically that nothing in this universe has the power to create anything (lailaha); there must be a Source, not of the nature of this universe causing everything to come into existence (illalah).

Now, we need to train ourselves to apply this theoretical conclusion within our practical lives by following the Prophetic teachings.
