Section Fatiha, part 4

Section Fatiha, part 4

Recap: Through the manifested qualities of the Creator (Names or “ism” in Arabic), we should understand that the One who is the Owner of these qualities in the world is called “God” (Allah in Arabic).  Hence, we cannot have an imaginary understanding of God.  For example, the One who created an apple with its perfect shape, color and purposeful design to meet our taste must be a One who is Wise and Absolutely Powerful.  That is what we call “God”, the One who manifests His qualities in the apple.  The apple is subject to continuous change which we refer to as decay.  Who is arranging these stages of changes?  Only the One who must have Absolute Knowledge of creation can set up the universe as such.  In this way, any discipline that we study in this universe are all related to the action of God, because whatever phenomenon we study can only be created by God.  For example, how do you explain the process of photosynthesis?  A leaf, in and of itself, is matter, which has no consciousness to feed itself, let alone communicate with the branches, and the whole plant.  So how can we say that the plant sustains itself “naturally” or that is how the plant is created together with the process of photosynthesis?  What is giving existence to the order and balance which we refer to as “photosynthesis”?  Only the One who creates the whole universe with perfect air, sky, atmosphere for living creatures to breathe in, just to name a few qualities, this One is called “God”.  People are free to attribute the manifested qualities that they experience to whatever entity they wish to attribute those qualities to.  However, the reality is that these qualities do not belong to the thing itself but the One who is the Creator of the whole universe, called God.

Everything in the universe is integrated with each other, hence, nothing acts independently from the rest of creation because they all act by the will (command) of their Creator, God.  Some may say that the universe is created by God, and the plant is producing photosynthesis.  Regardless of such interpretations, the disciplines and subject matter that we study in this universe give us data (concepts, phenomenon, equations, entities…) which we must use to understand the One who created the things and the manifestations of the qualities.  All these qualities that we gather from studying the various disciplines (Science, Psychology, Sociology…) refer to the perfect coherent order of the Owner of the universe, the Creator.  We ask ourselves who created me?  It is the One who created the whole universe and puts me in connection with the rest of the universe.

If someone recognizes the qualities manifested in the creation of anything as belonging to God, then they are being true to their human reality.  However, if you are resolute in your rejection of your human reality, then, as per Quranic verses, God asks you to check yourself whether you are being obstinate not wanting to declare your human reality.  Furthermore, such obstinacy also comes from the hesitation of following a Prophet (Messenger of God, pbuh) who as a human being, was an ordinary man, orphan, poor, shepherd, below status in society, not a literate man, not a poet, and not famous at all, but known as a  “trustful man”.  Am I going to follow him?  Nowadays, some say: am I going to follow a Bedouin, an uneducated man from 1400 years ago?  We must know that the acceptance of one’s human reality is about modesty and paying attention to what this person called “Muhammad” says, rather than getting caught up with their status in the society or physical appearance. He says, “What I am conveying to you is not my speech or idea, I am given this document by your Creator, the Creator of the universe. I am only a person like you are, but God has revealed to me this document (the Qur’an).

“Say, ‘I am only a human being, like you, to whom it has been revealed that your God is One. Anyone who fears to meet his Lord should do good deeds and give no one a share in the worship due to his Lord.” (Kahf, 18: 110)

The main pillar of Islam is the “shahadah” which is “ashhadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluhu” and translated as “There is no god in the universe but God (Allah – i.e. there is none who has any power to create but God), and Muhammad is the worshiper and the Messenger of God”.

Unfortunately, the Muslim community misses the emphasis of “abduhu” which translates to “worshiper”.  First, we must recognize that Muhammad or any other Prophet such as David, Jesus, Solomon (just to name a few) are all men just like you and me.  Some may say that Muhammad was the most trustworthy man, which is correct, but it is a quality of the character of that person.  As far as the body is concerned, as a human being, Muhammad is like you and me, an “abd”, a worshipper of God.  Are you an “abd”?  Yes.  Muhammad was an “abd” as well like yourself, but his acknowledgment and recognition of being an “abd” maybe sincere and deeper than us.  Everyone is an “abd”, a worshiper of God.  Just as the richest man on this planet is a citizen of the world, so are we, a citizen of the world.  We are all equal as citizens of this world.  But the richest man is very knowledgeable about financial literacy (a quality) as opposed to me, I am ignorant of financial literacy.  However, we are all equal in the eye of the Lord as “abd”, our status as “worshiper of God”, the only difference is in our virtues as far as our being honest to our recognition of our createdness and who our Creator is.  Therefore, as an “abd”, Muhammad had to believe in God, the angels, the hereafter, and that he is a Prophet employed by God.  As an “abd”, he must confirm as an “abd” what he receives from an angel.  As a messenger of God, he received the message of God from an angel and delivered it to people.  That is why it is important for us to take the example from the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) being an “abd”.  In other words, we should sincerely take an example from him being a worshiper of God. As far as the Revelation that he received and conveyed to us is concerned, it is related to belief in the Books.

When Muhammad as an “abd” received what God revealed to him, how did he confirm it?  Verse 2:285 of the Quran,

translates as The Messenger firmly believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. They all believe in God, His angels, His Books, and His messengers. They proclaim, “We make no distinction between any of His messengers.” And they say, “We hear and obey. We seek Your forgiveness, our Lord! And to You alone is the final return.”

Like everyone else including you and I, the Prophets believed in God and confirmed.  Do you see God?  No.  Did the Prophet Muhammad see God?  No, but he believed in Him.  Like everyone else including you and I, the Prophets believed in angels and confirmed their existence.  Did you see angels?  No.  Did the Prophet see an angel?  There is one Hadith narration that mentions that an angel appeared in the form of a human being while the Prophet was together with other human beings, but not to deliver the Revelation.

  • Angels, by definition, do not have any material substance in their beings.  If a thing does not have a material substance, then it cannot be seen by the naked eye.  The eyes only see the material appearance. That is why after taking the appearance of a person they could see him on one occasion only.

Belief in God is not imagination; it is certainty based on evidence and confirming it.  For example, you see a water bottle on the table.  Do you believe that the bottle is made by a conscious being?  Yes.  How do you know that?  Did you see the conscious being making the bottle?  No.  How are you sure that the bottle is made by a conscious being?  The bottle cannot happen to be in existence by itself, there must be a conscious designer, producer  to make it in a certain shape and quality by following the orderly creation. That is belief.  Do you have any doubt about this belief?  No.  That is certainty (yaqeen) about the existence of something that you did not physically experience.  Similarly, we experience the whole universe and conclude there must be a conscious Creator who created the whole universe.  Whoever created the whole universe, with every single being integrated with each other in it, is also continuously changing the whole universe?  Who is changing the universe within the context of the entire universe?  Only the One who creates the universe, called “God” is responsible for the existence of the universe.  That is why we cannot describe God, just as we cannot describe the designer of the bottle in the example above, but we are sure of its existence, that is certainty in belief.  With the bottle example, we can speculate about the designer to be a human being because of the conditions of this universe, however, when it comes to the Creator of the universe, we cannot describe it with anything of this universe, that is why we describe it as “Absolute”.  “Absolute” means to reach a conclusion which does not physically exist within the context of the universe, but we are certain of the necessity of its existence.  That is, I am sure that the universe must be given existence by an Absolute Being, which is what “tawheed” (Absoluteness/Oneness) of God is.

Unlike some prevalent belief systems that entertain the idea of God in the universe, which creates complications in people’s minds, the “Quranic God” is simple, not complicated, to conclude through observation and logical reasoning.  “I am His work; all my feelings are His work”.  When we realize this through our evidence, then belief in God becomes a certainty.  Just as the shape of the bottle and its design cannot happen by itself or by its elements, but someone made it purposefully to fulfill a purpose, similarly, the universe cannot happen by itself, but Someone made it purposefully so conscious human beings can fulfill their purpose of existence.  As a result of looking at qualities manifested in creation, we conclude that there must be an Absolute Conscious Being giving existence to the universe.  That is why much emphasis is put on the concept of “tawheed” in the Quran which is simple, and easily understandable to confirm.

Unfortunately, we do not go from the evidence (i.e. the universe) to conclude about the Source of existence of this evidence, “rabbul alameen” (we will study it in the coming paragraphs).  We must establish our belief based on confirmation, rather than hearing it as a narration.  It is not hard, but it requires serious attentiveness to realize that our belief is based on the manifestations of the qualities of the Creator of this universe, because only through the qualities, I am connecting with the universe to understand the source of its existence.  This is called belief in God through His Names, the manifestations of His qualities.  Otherwise, I would be connecting with the universe for the purpose of the universe (matter) itself.

If I connect my intellect and feelings to the aspect of what the creation indicates, which shows the qualities of its Creator, then I fulfill the purpose of my existence, which is to seize the opportunities provided for me to get to know who is my Owner, Master.  God says that I keep giving you opportunities to get in contact with Me.  The universe is an opportunity for us to connect with our Creator.  Everything we do, from eating to dressing up, for example, must be used as a jumping board to reach the conclusion about who God is.  For example, your outfits are beautiful and this quality must be used as an opportunity to conclude that the One who made it, made it beautifully, so beauty comes from Him.  God says that if you communicate with me through the manifestations of My Name (His qualities) in the universe, I will reward you with a direct experience of my Qualities, Names manifesting, called “Paradise”.  We must understand that Paradise is not given because you did something good, rather, it is the result of your conscious confirmation of “belief” .  Accordingly, what our belief in God requires of us is a plus.

Paradise= My conscious confirmation of God (Belief) + Belief requirements (religious rituals and ethics)

Paradise is the result of your realization of God’s manifested qualities, communicating with Him through the qualities manifested in the universe. For example, you eat food to experience the manifestations of His qualities.  The creation of food is purposeful because it is useful, tasty, and beautifully designed…  Your mouth and stomach benefits from the body, but your human spirit connects with the aspect of the food that reminds you of its Creator.  That is, your mind, heart, spirit, and consciousness is connected to the Creator, whereas your body is connected to the physical body of the substance that you are benefitting from.  If you have this attitude, life on this planet will be beautiful.

2:25 “Give those who believe and do good deeds, the news that they will have Gardens graced with flowing streams. Whenever they are given sustenance from the fruits of these Gardens, they will say, ‘We have been given this before, because they were provided with something like it.  They will have pure spouses and there they will stay.”

In Paradise, the people who used this universe as a jumping board to communicate with God through His manifested qualities (the believers), will say, I remember I was in the world experiencing these kinds of things.  Only those who experience the aspect of the creation which reminded them of the Names of God, the manifestations of the qualities of God, will be rewarded with this.  The Creator says, “as a result of recognizing the manifestations of My Names, I will give you something similar to that which you experienced in the world, not exactly the same.  You will be given that Name manifesting directly in Paradise as soon as you desire it, not like in the world, where you must follow the order and experience the results”.  Again, such treatment is only preserved for those who connected with God in this universe by using opportunities as a jumping board to connect with Him.

The people who used the opportunities as a jumping board to connect with the things themselves will have nothing preserved to enjoy in Paradise.  For example, you are eating an apple, and you are enjoying its taste and qualities by attributing it to the apple itself and considering yourself to be lucky to get the apple.  With such experience, there is no connection of the enjoyment of the qualities of the apple to the Names of God.  Hence, such people will have nothing preserved for them in Paradise.  Whereas the people who do make the connection of eating the apple opportunity with God’s Names, will preserve themselves an experience like this world, but not exactly the same. Let us use an analogy to further understand this.

Analogy: You are using this laptop, and the Engineer of the laptop is standing behind you and you do not know that.  While using the laptop, you are amazed at the qualities of the laptop and keep praising what a wonderful laptop, which happens to be existing through choosing the best option, adopting itself to the environment and at the end haphazardly reaching its perfection as I use it now.  As you are fascinated with the laptop and use it ceaselessly, the laptop crashes (referring to death.)  Do you think the Engineer of the laptop will give you another laptop?  No.  Because you were busy being mesmerized with the laptop and fulfilling your desires only, with no acknowledgement whatsoever of the Engineer of the laptop.  On the other hand, while using this laptop, you keep appreciating the Engineer of the laptop and applauds the hard work that was put into making the laptop fully functional, by wishing that if only you can see this wonderful Engineer, you will say “thank you from the bottom of my heart”.  Now, the laptop crashes, what do you expect the Engineer to do for you?  The Engineer will give you another laptop with a higher model because he knows that you appreciate them as the Engineer of the laptop through the qualities manifested in the laptop. You improved your feelings (spirit) to deserve a higher quality. This understanding capacity is  given to us in order to understand how our Creator is going to treat us here and in the hereafter.

Similarly, the Creator of the universe can give you another body (laptop) when you die, because you acknowledge the Creator through His Names (qualities), and you understand and confirm that the One who created the universe must have Infinite qualities.  If someone has limited qualities, can it be the Creator of this perfectly functioning universe?  No.  God says that I will give you an existence with my Infinite qualities directly as you want, and that is why “Paradise is eternal”.  Knowing the Name of God, and communicating with the world, by acknowledging and being conscious of the manifestations of the Names of His qualities, that are infinite, will result in Eternal Paradise.  Hence, the knowledge of God’s Names in this universe is not a simple subject matter, rather, it is the most essential duty that the human being must be aware of.

36:71 “Can they not see how, among the things made by Our hands, We have created livestock they control.”

Analogy: When a mother hears that her daughter is coming from overseas to visit her, she starts knitting warm outfits for her daughter to keep her warm.  She tells her daughter that for every knitting stroke with her hand, her daughter was in the mother’s mind.  How would the daughter feel?  Priceless.  Similarly, God is telling us the same thing: “All the things you benefit from, I have made it specially for you with My Hands- metaphorically meaning directly without any intermediaries”.

  • This act of care and concern is for me to understand that the qualities manifested here are coming from my Creator, so I acknowledge my Creator, and keep this consciousness alive so as to be thankful to Him.

Do not be ungrateful and deny your Creator, otherwise you will face the consequences.  Some argue that the Creator puts people in Hell, but after understanding these verses with the proper Quranic methodology, we can clearly see that if you deny your Creator, then you subject yourself to Hell i.e. an existence without any ever-merciful manifestations of the qualities of God.  In the Quran, God describes Paradise to be something eternal that you preserve i.e. an infinite reward, whereas Hell is described as a one-to-one punishment in eternal terms.  Again, Hell is something that human beings subject themselves to and deserve it by denying the Mercy of God.

For example, electricity is supplied through the power plant.  If you disconnect the electric power in your house, then you will not get electricity from the power plant. This is the result of your choice; the power plant meant to give you light, you chose, “No, I do not want it.” Similarly, if you disconnect yourself from acknowledging the Mercy of God, then you cannot be a candidate for Eternal Paradise.  Therefore, Paradise is something that God gives in abundance, just like the power plant in the example gives you electricity (unlike the electric power supply here, there is no fee to connect with the Infinite Mercy of God).  The Quran teaches us this reality in a logical way, which are beautiful teachings.  Unfortunately, people use languages that contradict the Qur’anic teachings such as “God will punish you”, “God is angry with you”.  Rather, you made yourself deserve what you experience as a result of your free choice.  For example, you expect something to be created but you did not receive it as a result of not choosing the means provided for you to deserve it, and you say, “this should not be, God should give me.”  Here, you are angry with God, and God says that I am creating as you deserve which is what you need right now.  Let us take an analogy to understand this.

Analogy: You did not answer any questions on the test, and the teacher gives you a zero.  That is a fair and good teacher.  Whereas if the teacher gives you a 50% for not answering any questions on the test, that would be an unjust and not good teacher, because the teacher is not encouraging the student to study.  To make you feel pleased with her, the teacher harms you by giving a 50%.  That is not the way to teach.  Now, by giving a zero, the teacher is not angry with you, rather the teacher is being merciful to you, letting you know that you need to study and encouraging you to be serious in your studies.  That is a loving teacher.  Similarly, the Creator of the universe treats us the same way with His Mercy and Compassion for us.  As far as the student is concerned, by receiving a zero, you may think that the teacher is angry with you.

That is how the Quran speaks to human beings according to human experience and at the level of human capacity.  Therefore, God is not angry with you, rather you deprived yourself of God’s Mercy.  God is treating you in a just and Merciful way because you need to be reminded when you do something wrong.  When the people reject the Prophetic messages, God says that I will destroy you, which means that you have been choosing wrong options; if you continue to do the same you will deserve it because you choose not to have meaning in your life for Eternal Paradise and live with God consciousness.  That is why when the Quran mentions a certain people with their names, it means that you need to be careful with how you choose to live your life, either with God consciousness and securing Eternal Paradise, or temporarily enjoying pleasures until you die.  Hence, if you deny yourself from following the Prophetic messages, you will be living a meaningless life not worth living and bringing about your own ruin..  Again, that is how the Quranic message must be read i.e. God is speaking to me from my perspective.  Why does God speak to me?  To educate me.  In the analogy above, is the teacher angry at the student for giving him/her a zero?  No.  The teacher is giving a zero out of love and concern for the student to educate them to study.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

1:2 “All praise is due to God alone, the Lord of all the worlds.”

Do we see anything in the universe independently existing from the rest of creation?  No.  Can your power of sight exist independent of you?  No.  Your eyes are created according to the condition of the whole body and integrated with the outside world.  What about your tongue?  If there was no food in existence, how would you know that your tongue is capable of acknowledging thousands of different tastes?  Similarly, your nose has so many sensors.  When something smells, you get alarmed.  That is how everything is so connected with each other.  Your mind, imagination, consciousness is directly connected with each other and the universe.  The One who creates the universe speaks in the same way.

Analogy: Look at a sweater, which is essentially a huge, long string woven intermingled to form a fabric.  Can you take one woven part out of the sweater?  No.  Each part in the knitting is directly connected with each other.  Similarly, the Quran is the same way, where each verse cannot be studied independently from the whole context of the Quran.  When we say “God”, we mean the Creator of the whole universe, because the universe exists within an interconnected platform, where no part can be studied individually from the rest of the universe. To make inferences about the qualities of the parts as if a part is separate from the whole distorts the connectedness of existing within the context of the whole universe. For example, investigate any part of your body, let’s take the brain and see how it communicates with the liver.  The liver in our body performs at least 400 functions based on what has been discovered thus far.  The liver, in and of itself, is only a piece of meat, which is made to function with the rest of the body.  The body itself functions with the rest of the universe.  Who has set up such a system of this universe that we live in, where everything is so integrated with the rest of creation?  If one says that the universe must have a Creator and human beings are given existence by the same Creator, then how can we imply that the brain is the source of the communication with the liver, for example.  This sounds very irrational, and we must be careful about how we reason with our experiences in this universe.  Sadly, Materialist Scientists investigate one object by taking it out of the whole context of the universe and make claims that the object is performing some actions on its own by itself.  However, nothing can act on its own independently as everything is well-interconnected with the rest of the universe, where everything needs to be given existence by an External Conscious Agent, not of the nature of this universe (i.e. Absolute Creator).

Now, going back to the first part of the verse 1:2, what are we praising?

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ

“All praise is due to God alone,”

We are praising the “ism” (Names) from verse 1:1, “bismillah” (as previously studied in part 1-3 of this series, please refer to those notes by clicking here), which are the Names of the Creator.  For example, look at an apple, out of its many qualities, let’s focus on its design, which exists within the context of the whole universe.  That is, the quality in that creation belongs to the One who creates not only the whole apple, the apple tree, the air, the atmosphere, but also the whole universe.  Thus, we are praising the Creator of the apple who designed it perfectly, not the design itself.  For example, if I praise the information written in a book I must be aware that I am praising the author and the paper sheets. All the manifestations of the qualities (asmau’l-Husna, Perfect Names of God, “ism”) in the creation of anything deserves to be appreciated because everything exists within the context of the whole universe.

There is no vocabulary word for “alhamdu” that matches best in English.  The closest we come to is “all praise”, otherwise, “the praise” will not do justice to the meaning of how everything in its existence with its qualities is worthy of its Creator’s praise.  From the beginning to the end of the universe, every single particle deserves to be praised for its Creator’s sake.  Why?  Because you wonder who is setting up all this at my disposal, who is the Agent behind the actions that I see manifested in the form of qualities?  If something is designed perfectly, then it needs to be appreciated perfectly.  Just as every keystroke that is pressed on a laptop needs to be appreciated as belonging to the Engineer of the whole laptop. Similarly, every quality of the apple needs to be appreciated as belonging to the Creator of the whole universe.

We will connect the meanings of the verse with “bismillah”, as if tying the knot.  By tying the knots from the meanings of the verse, we will make a fabric out of it.  Just as the Creator of the universe creates the whole universe integrated and interconnected, similarly, the Creator of the universe must speak with the same interconnected qualities as He creates the universe.  The Quran’s literature value demonstrates that I belong to the One who creates the whole universe because “My way of speech is exactly like how creation is taking place in the universe”.  Therefore, the Quran must be the Speech of the One who creates the universe.  Why?  Because the universe and the Verbal Speech of God have the same interwoven quality and convey the same message.

Therefore, the meaning of “alhamdu” refers to all the manifested Names of God that we are experiencing in this world as belonging to the One who we call “Allah”, because all the Names (qualities) that we see manifested in the universe can only belong to the One who created the whole universe.  That is why, “All Praise is due to God only”, because we cannot attribute any part of this universe and my body to anything of this universe, besides God.  For example, whoever created your nose, gave it the ability to communicate with the rest of the universe through smell.  Hence, we cannot say that the nose is a tissue of my body functioning by itself, rather it functions within the context of the universe with anything that manifests smell. Are the tissues of the nose aware of the thousands of kinds of smell in the world? My nose is created to function in harmony with all things that have smell.  Just like a detector focuses on a specificity, similarly, the nose is a detector for smell.  The One who made these detectors (nose, ears, eyes…) knows exactly what the detector is going to catch.  With understanding this first part of verse 1:2, we have tied the knot from “alhamdolillah” to “bismillah”, and we will tie it to the second part of the verse, which is below.  By tying more knots, we will make a fabric as perfect as the universe.

لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ  “God, the Lord of the worlds.”

If you want eternal pleasure for your spirit, then you must acknowledge the Names of God, and live with the consciousness of the Names of God.  It is not possible to keep this awareness alive 100% throughout the day, but at least from time to time, try to remember when saying “bismillah” oralhamdulillah” that everything that is prepared in this universe is perfect in its creation, and is prepared for you specially.  God specifically made it for you i.e. it is Handmade by Him.  In other words, when you get something, think that you are getting it directly from your Creator’s Hand (not in a literal sense, but with the awareness of the Creator).  For example, when you breathe, it is created by God, especially for you.  Can you imagine, you are being given a gift without any payment?!  With such heightened awareness, you can always feel in connection with your Creator all the time as you receive an infinite number of gifts every day.  Everyone is treated differently and is a unique being in their creation.  Finally, when you realize the importance of acknowledging the Names of God, it is very pleasurable, and you do not feel bored because God is always with you, treating and serving you with His Hands.

Next week, we will study more about the praise we should make, which needs to be referred to the Lord of the worlds.  Our Praise should not be limited to the gift that we have been receiving continuously from the Lord of the universe.
